We are currently seeking dedicated and compassionate Wheelchair Assistants to join our passenger services team at OR Tambo International Airport. This role is central to creating a positive travel experience for passengers who require mobility assistance.

Job Overview

The Wheelchair Assistant is responsible for providing professional and courteous mobility support to passengers who need assistance throughout their airport journey. This includes aiding passengers from check-in counters to boarding gates, assisting during transit, and ensuring safe arrival at baggage claim or onward transport areas.

The role requires individuals with excellent communication skills, patience, empathy, and a customer-first mindset. Applicants must be physically fit, reliable, and able to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays.

Key Responsibilities

As a Wheelchair Assistant, you will be expected to:

• Provide assistance to passengers requiring wheelchair support from the point of arrival until departure or transfer.
• Escort passengers through security, immigration, boarding gates, and baggage claim areas.
• Ensure passengers feel comfortable, supported, and respected during their airport journey.
• Handle wheelchairs and other mobility equipment safely and efficiently.

• Communicate effectively with airline staff, airport security, and colleagues to coordinate smooth passenger handling.
• Adhere strictly to Menzies Aviation’s safety and security procedures at all times.
• Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and professionalism when assisting passengers of different backgrounds.
• Ensure punctuality and reliability to maintain smooth operations.
• Maintain cleanliness, orderliness, and proper handling of mobility equipment.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Grade 12 / Matric qualification or equivalent.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in English (knowledge of additional South African languages will be an advantage).
• Physically fit and able to push passengers in wheelchairs across airport facilities.
• Customer service experience, preferably in hospitality, healthcare, or transport industries.

• High level of patience, empathy, and compassion when dealing with passengers.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure in a busy airport environment.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
• South African citizenship or valid work permit.
• Clean criminal record and willingness to undergo background checks.
